This former coastal pā site is believed to be named after a Ngāti Tū ancestor, reflected in the name of the local hapū Ngāti Whakaari who identify with this pā and waka landing area. The Māui story as shared by Ngahiwi Tomoana refers to this also being a site where Māui performed, whakaari, the rites and embedded knowledge in the place. This site demonstrates layers of cultural narratives and history.
